A teenage girl is fighting for life in a Melbourne hospital after a three-vehicle crash at a road work site in southern NSW.

The 14-year-old was travelling in the passenger seat of a Triton ute which collided with a Mitsubishi Lancer and a B-Double truck on the Sturt Highway, about 5km west of Carrathool, on Wednesday morning.

She and the 34-year-old Triton driver were airlifted to Melbourne for treatment after being rescued from the wreckage, where the teenager remains in a critical condition.

The truck and Lancer drivers were not injured in the crash, which shut down the Sturt Highway for eight hours.
