Almost six decades after a Hobart teenager went missing from a boat crossing the city's Derwent River, a coroner has ruled he drowned.

The body of Christopher George Jackson, 17 when he went missing in December 1958, has never been found despite a search commencing immediately when his absence was noticed.

"Although no one seems to have seen or heard Christopher fall from the boat into the water on the night of his disappearance, it seems to me on the balance of probabilities, that this is the most likely explanation for his disappearance," coroner Simon Cooper said in findings published on Wednesday, noting Christopher and his friends had been drinking alcohol.
