Teenage prisoners have damaged a Victorian juvenile detention centre during a prison riot that lasted three hours.

About a dozen teens confronted prison officers at the Malmsbury Youth Detention Centre at 7pm on Saturday night.

A Department of Health and Human Services spokesman said the matter was safely resolved with the help of the Youth Justice Safety Emergency Response Team just before 10pm.

He said there were no injuries to staff or young people.

Victoria Police will investigate any damage to the Deakin unit of the jail, located 100km northwest of Melbourne.

It is not the first time young prisoners have held guards at bay at the detention centre - a recent WorkSafe report found staff were in danger if the situation did not improve.

Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos says measures to improve the system were underway.

"We have implemented a rolling recruitment pipeline to ensure vacancies are filled as soon as possible," Ms Mikakos said in a statement on Sunday night.

She said up to 60 new staff were expected to begin work across youth justice by December, with 23 to be inducted this month.
