Five teenagers will face court on Tuesday after two separate police chases following a serious expressway crash in Adelaide.

Police allege the teenagers were in a stolen black Mercedes that was pursued in Thebarton on Monday, after reports it may have been involved in a crash on the Southern Expressway.

A 17-year-old boy, 17-year-old girl and 16-year-old girl were arrested when the Mercedes was abandoned at Dry Creek.

The other two teenagers, both 17-year-old boys, allegedly stole a Nissan SUV and were arrested after that car was pursued and crashed into a ditch at Edinburgh.

Links between the stolen black Mercedes and the crash on the South Expressway are being investigated.

The crash left a man from another car in the Flinders Medical Centre with serious injuries, while two of his passengers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The five charged teens have been refused bail and will face a string of charges at the Adelaide Youth Court on Tuesday, including illegal use of motor vehicle, theft, aggravated serious criminal trespass and engaging in a police pursuit.
