Australia's diving team will use this weekend's FINA Grand Prix meet on the Gold Coast to adapt to the venue's outdoor pool, as they begin their preparations for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

While the event is largely under-strength given no finalists from the 2016 Olympics will compete in their respective events, Australia will have two of their Rio representatives in Brittany O'Brien and Kevin Chavez on hand when it begins on Thursday at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

The pool will also host the diving at the Commonwealth Games, a rarity given most major diving centres around the world are based indoors.

And while the recent Rio Olympics also used a pool which was open to the elements, it was the first Games to do so since Barcelona in 1992.

"Getting to experience this pool is going to be really good practice for the Games," O'Brien said.

"The 10-metre can get a little bit windy which is a bit of a concern but I've just got to push through it."

O'Brien, 18, had never competed in an outdoor pool prior to August's Olympics, and admits to preferring the indoor setting.

She trains indoors at Sydney Olympic Park, and said it's more than just the wind that can be a concern when the blue sky and water are a similar colour.

"It can be quite different," she said.

"It's pretty off-putting in your mind. Once you take off it doesn't affect you but it's more in your head."

O'Brien finished 15th in the semi-finals 10m platform in Rio after being a late addition to the Australian team, while Kevin Chavez was 26th in the 3m springboard.

Chavez is the only male Australian diver at this weekend's event, while O'Brien is part of a youthful five-woman team where 21-year-old Taneka Kovchenko is the oldest.

Australia's top-ranked Melissa Wu will skip the meet, which will also include divers from Canada, China, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States.
