PAST INSTANCES OF STRAINED MILITARY TIES BETWEEN AUSTRALIA AND INDONESIA:

* 1965 Australian troops participated in an undeclared war on the island of Borneo between Indonesia and Malaysia - a conflict dubbed "Konfrontasi" or confrontation. The troops fought alongside British and New Zealand soldiers to protect a newly established Malaysian federation from attacks by Indonesian paratroop and amphibious raids.

* 1986 Indonesia suspended military exchanges as well as ministerial visits following the publication of Sydney Morning Herald article accusing the Suharto family of corruption.

* 1999 Australia suspended training with Indonesian special forces following human rights abuses in East Timor in the lead-up to the country's independence.

* 2013 Indonesia withdrew its ambassador to Canberra and suspended co-operation on military, people-smuggling and policing after revelations Australian spies had eavesdropped on the mobile phones of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, his wife, and close confidants.
