The best Christmas movie each year since 1985

Each year, the calendar turning to December signals the official start of Oscar season. Studios stack the last month of the year with prestige films earmarked for awards buzz, as "For Your Consideration" advertisements pop up nationwide. Though the Academy Awards talk can dominate popular culture, another cinematic staple in December is a bevy of Christmas-themed films.

These films help moviegoers get into the holiday spirit by watching tales of Christmas magic. PrettyFamous, an entertainment data site by Graphiq, named the best Christmas movie every year since 1985. To do this, movies were ranked on their Smart Rating — a score out of 100 that takes into account a movie's IMDb rating, Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer and Audience Score, Metacritic rating, Gracenote rating and inflation-adjusted U.S. box office gross. To qualify, movies had to have at least 2,000 IMDb votes. If no Christmas movies released that year had above 2,000 votes, there was no floor taken into account.

Some years have clear-cut winners for the honor, while others are more contentious. The year 2003 featured two beloved films in "Elf" and "Love Actually" that have become staples for any Christmas movie buff. We'll run down each year, including our selection for 2016, with a release date cutoff of November 11.
