Indie music legends The Stone Roses have announced three special performances at the Sydney Opera House this year.

The Manchester band who led the UK's post-punk music scene in the early 1990s announced their return to the scene this year with a world tour, including four massive home town gigs and sold-out shows in New York's Madison Square Garden and in Scotland and Ireland.

They also released two new songs this year, All For One and Beautiful Thing - their first new songs since 1994 but they have yet to announce a third album.

The band last toured Australia three years ago as part of the Future Music Festival but these Opera House shows will be their only performances Down Under on this tour.

The world tour will finish with the special performances at the Opera House, performed in an intimate in-the-round setting.

* The Stone Roses play at the Sydney Opera House December 12-14.
