A Cairns school has gone into lockdown after a teenage boy threatened to attack the premises.

Police are helping collect students from Balaclava Primary School after the teenage boy made the threats on Monday.

Staff members are also contacting families of students who normally walk to and from school to ensure they can get home safely.

Police have not detailed the nature of the threats, which are being investigated by detectives.
