Three teenagers have been charged over a series of armed robberies and a high-speed chase that ended in their dramatic arrest on top of Melbourne's busy West Gate Bridge.

Police chased the trio from the air and ground as they brought peak-hour traffic to a standstill on Monday afternoon.

The chase began in Dandenong following an armed robbery at a Lalor jewellery store at about 2pm and then another attempted robbery at a tobacco shop in Preston.

Police followed the car along the Princes Freeway to Werribee before swarming around the vehicle and arresting the teens at 5.30pm on top of the West Gate Bridge.

Two 17-year-old boys, from Cranbourne and Cranbourne North, have been charged with numerous offences including armed robbery, burglary, theft of motor vehicle and reckless conduct.

They were both remanded to appear in a children's court.

An 18-year-old Hampton Park man has also been charged with numerous offences including armed robbery, burglary, theft of motor vehicle and reckless conduct.

He has been remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
