Three million Australians live in poverty

THE STATE OF POVERTY IN AUSTRALIA

* 2.99 million people (13.3 per cent of population) living below poverty line in 2014

* Down from 2012 (13.9 per cent), but higher than decade ago (11.8 per cent in 2003-04)

* Poverty line (50 per cent of median income):

- $426.30 a week for single adult

- $895.22 a week for couple with two children

* 731,300 children aged under 15 (17.4 per cent of all children) living below poverty line

* Children in lone parent families more likely to live in poverty (40.6 per cent) than those from couple families (12.5 per cent)

* 36.1 per cent of people receiving social security payments living below poverty line

* Those living on $38 a day Newstart allowance doing it toughest.
