It hasn't taken long to silence the critics. Tiger Woods has stormed up the leaderboard upon his return to golf at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

Woods, playing his first competitive round in nearly 18 months lit up the exclusive course with four birdies in his first eight holes.

Woods opened with back-to-back pars before making a birdie on the par-five third hole but since then has been on a tear.

The 14-time major winner got up and down for a birdie on the 595 yard par-five 12th hole and another birdie at the par-four 7th followed.

Then at the 216-yard par-three eighth Woods struck a glorious six iron to inside a foot and tapped in for a third consecutive birdie to go four-under in the high-quality field.

The birdie blitz stopped on the par-five ninth when Woods fluffed a green-side chip shot and made bogey, but he's three-under through nine holes and three shots off current leader J.B Holmes.

The elite 18-man field has attracted some of the world's top golfers including world No.3 Dustin Johnson and No.5 Jordan Spieth, fourth-ranked Swede Henrik Stenson and Britain's Olympic champion Justin Rose.

With no midway cut Woods will get four rounds to assess his comeback before deciding on where and when he will return to the PGA Tour.
