Tim Read narrowly edged out north Canterbury pig farmer Leo Fernandez after two gruelling final challenges.

With just one point in it heading into the dessert finale, the two men at times struggled to get their heads around the demands of the pastry construction.

"I'm just happy to get something on the plate," Fernandez said as he presented his effort to the judges.

But Read managed to win over the judges, eventually getting one over Fernandez on taste.

"I'm speechless," Read said after he was crowned the winner. "I wasn't expecting that."

This year's season of Masterchef has been judged by chefs Al Brown, Josh Emett and Mark Wallbank.
