ACCC DEPUTY CHAIR DELIA RICKARD SHARES SOME TIPS TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM SCAMS:

* If it seems too good to be true, it's probably a lie.

* Be suspicious and never send money to someone you've met online, no matter how wonderful your relationship.

* Don't click on any links in any emails unless you are 100 per cent sure that the sender really is who they say they are.

* If something doesn't sound right, never use the contact details in an email or phone call. Use a phone book or Google search to contact the organisation and check for yourself if it's a trusted brand such as a government department, utility or telco.

* If you are being asked to pay by gift cards, iTunes gift cards, wire order, wire transfer, bitcoin - it's a scam, don't do it.

* Protect your personal information. Never give out personal information including bank account details to someone who has contacted you out of the blue over the phone or via email, no matter how legitimate they sound.

* Keep your computer's security and anti-virus software up to date and back-up regularly.
