Tkay Maidza can handle the solitude

Adelaide rapper Tkay Maidza is happy to be alone.

Maidza, who burst on to the scene at the age of just 17 with catchy breakthrough tracks Brontosaurus and Handle My Ego, knows what it's like to be popular.

She's constantly the girl that draws the crowds at any festival she plays at, including this year's Splendour In The Grass.

But unlike many others who sail the dizzying heights fame and adulation can bring only to crash into the waves of despair when their popularity wanes, Maidza seems pretty impervious to all of that.

Her attitude comes largely from her background.

The 20-year-old first moved to Australia at the age of five, moving to WA from Zimbabwe and then on to Adelaide five years' later because of her parents' work.

The advantage to all of that is that Maidza likes being in her own company and has made it a strong message on her upcoming debut album, TKAY.

"I think the theme of the album is almost trying to find strength or belonging through being isolated and being alone," Maidza told AAP.

"To find where you fit when you feel isolated or when you feel like you don't have anyone there around you."

It proves that while Maidza is often compared with Iggy Azalea, just because she's also an Australian female rapper, there's something far deeper at play in her music.

The songs, she explains, came from times where she felt she wasn't communicating with anyone.

"That was when I was the most inspired to write stuff, when I was feeling alone or alienated from everyone or almost detached," she said.

"I think I've always felt it."

That strength in her isolation is working for Maidza with the rapper gaining a prestigious BET nomination for Best International Act at this year's US Awards.

Maidza is also about to drop her highly-anticipated debut album and tour the country.

It seems solitude is just not in her future.
