Four men have been arrested and 4.5 tonnes of tobacco seized during an investigation into a smuggling syndicate in Victoria.

The syndicate was first identified by Australian Federal Police through a "cheap cigarettes" website and the men were arrested during a series of raids between August and November.

All four have been charged with importing tobacco products with the intention of defrauding the revenue.

Two of them have also been charged being in possession of tobacco products, contrary to the Customs Act.

The maximum penalty for tobacco smuggling is up to 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine of up to five times the amount of tax evaded.
