Today's Birthday, August 25: American Actress Blake Lively (1987-)

Blake Lively may be known for her TV role as Serena Van Der Woodsen in Gossip Girl, but she got her start acting in feature films.

Born in Los Angeles on August 25 1987, Lively is the youngest of five children and is the daughter of former Hollywood actor and director Ernie Lively and talent scout Elaine.

With parents in the film industry and all four siblings working as actors, Lively was encouraged by her family to audition for several film and TV roles while in her junior year of high school.

At the age of 17, Lively got her break, landing a major role in the 2005 chick flick The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, with her performance earning her a Teen Choice Award nomination for Breakout Movie Star.

Coming off the success of Traveling Pants and her part in the film Accepted (2006), Lively was then cast in her most famous role to date, as the rich and reformed party girl Serena Van Der Woodsen in the hit teen drama series, Gossip Girl.

Bolstered by intense media coverage of the young and beautiful stars from the show, Gossip Girl developed a cult fan base, and in 2008 Lively won the Teen Choice Award for TV Actress and TV Breakout Star for her performance on the show.

While still working on Gossip Girl, Lively also starred in several Hollywood films including The Town (2010) and the DC comic blockbuster Green Lantern (2010), which is where she met and fell in love with co-star Ryan Reynolds. The pair was married in 2012.

After Gossip Girl ended the same year, Lively has continued to work in feature films, and recently starred in the soon-to-be-released survival horror, The Shallows (2016).

Lively and husband Reynolds welcomed their first child, daughter James, in 2014 and live in upstate New York.
