Today's Birthday, August 29: Australian TV presenter and comedian Charlie Pickering (1977 - ).

Charlie Pickering never thought he would be hosting his own comedy news program after walking away from a career as a lawyer to become a stand-up comedian.

Born in Melbourne on August 29 1977, Pickering was educated at St Leonards College, Brighton Grammar School and Monash University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws degree.

Pickering worked as a lawyer in Melbourne before deciding to leave the office environment to pursue his childhood dream of becoming a stand-up comedian.

In 2002 Pickering made his first appearance at the Melbourne Comedy Festival with long-time collaborator Mitchell Chamberlin in the show Boiling Point.

After the success of Boiling Point, which won the Piece of Wood comedy award, Pickering went on to debut several full-length festival shows around Australia and internationally.

In 2008 he began his TV career co-hosting The Comedy Channel show The Mansion for 13 episodes, and then hosting Chanel V's travelling game show, Cash Cab, for one season.

With presenting experience under his belt, Pickering was asked by Network Ten to be one of the co-hosts of its new infotainment news program, The Project, in July 2009.

He hosted the show alongside Carrie Bickmore and Dave Hughes for five years, and was there to see it nominated for multiple Logie awards, including his own nomination for Most Popular New Male Talent in 2010.

Pickering chose to wrap his time on The Project at the start of 2014 so he could focus on his stand-up.

In 2015 he returned to Australian TV screens as host of his own satire news program, The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, which returned this year for a second series on the ABC.

Pickering is married to lawyer and writer Sarah Krasnostein, who gave birth to their first child in 2014.
