Tourists visiting parts of Tasmania's wilderness are facing a "logging wasteland" according to conservation groups, who have slammed the state government for allowing forestry companies to clear fell right beside roads.

"On a major forest visitor road, the evidence of outdated and destructive native forest logging practice is apparently proudly displayed," Tasmanian Greens leader Cassy O'Connor said on Monday.

Conservationist Bob Brown has witnessed the deforestation through the southern Maydena Range and Styx Valley and has called for a 50-metre screen of forest to be maintained along the tourist road.
