Toyota has issued a recall of an additional 5.8 million vehicles globally over potentially faulty airbag inflators manufactured by Japanese car-parts supplier Takata.

Toyota's latest recall includes 1.47 million units in Europe, 1.16 million in Japan, and 820,000 in China and 2.35 million in other areas produced between May 2000 and November 2001, and April 2006 and December 2014, Japan's largest carmaker said.

The recall covers 20 models, including the Carolla, the Auris, the Noah or Voxy and the Vitz or Yaris subcompact, Toyota said.

Toyota has already announced recalls in the United States, involving the models made during the periods, it said.

Takata's defective airbag inflators have forced carmakers to recall tens of millions of vehicles globally. Its faulty airbags could rupture explosively when deployed, spraying metal fragments at drivers as well as passengers.

At least 15 deaths and more than 150 injuries have been linked to the defect worldwide, Takata said.
