After conquering one of the toughest sporting events in the world, Turia Pitt has let her hair down at the races.

Spotted at the Emirates Marquee at Oaks Day on Thursday, Pitt was dolled up in a bright yellow dress and black fascinator.

Having not attended the races before, she admitted having to do a bit of research on what was acceptable for 'Ladies Day'.

"I've been looking it up on the internet with what you can wear and what you can't," she told AAP.

She said she took a gamble on the small black fascinator but gave a sigh of relief after spying several ladies around the birdcage sporting similar looks.

Since receiving burns to 65 per cent of her body during a bushfire while competing for a marathon, Pitt hasn't stopped challenging herself.

In October, she managed to complete one of the toughest races in the world, the Hawaii Ironman Triathalon.

She finished the brutal 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and a 42.2km run in 14 hours.

"It wasn't a perfect day for me at all and there were a few things that went wrong but I'm proud of myself because I gave it my all," she said.

Attending the races had been a reward for her hard work, she added.
