Highly-respected coach Jamie Turner will join Triathlon Australia's high-performance program, headlining a major overhaul of its operations.

Turner coached American powerhouse Gwen Jorgensen to the women's triathlon gold medal at the Rio Olympics.

Australian Rio Olympians Ryan Bailie and Aaron Royle also worked under Turner in his Wollongong Wizards squad.

While Turner will continue to coach Jorgensen, he will now head Triathlon Australia's international performance centre in Wollongong and Vittoria, Spain.

Bringing Turner officially into the national program is a big result for Triathlon Australia's new performance director Ben Gathercole, who only took over the role in late October.

Rio was the first time since triathlon made its Games debut in Sydney where Australia did not win an Olympic medal in the sport.
