At least two children and a teacher have been injured in a shooting at a primary school in the southern US state of South Carolina.

The shooter was taken into custody, Sheila Cole from the local sheriff's office told broadcaster WYFF.

Deputies told the station they have a teen-aged suspect in custody.

Television images showed a massive police presence at Townville Elementary School.

A nearby highway was closed, and a rescue helicopter was on the scene. Details remained unclear.

While shootings have become more commonplace in the US, those involving schools remain rare.

In 2012, a tragic mass shooting occurred at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in which 20 children were among 26 people killed.

Approximately 300 children attend Townville Elementary School.
