A teenager seriously burnt when he spilt a flaming pot of oil on himself is one of two people taken to hospital after separate house fires in Melbourne.

The male in his late teens suffered serious burns to his neck, chest, arms and legs after he tried to move a pot of oil that caught fire in his Dandenong kitchen early on Monday morning.

He was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokesman told AAP.

In a separate incident, a man in his 50s was taken to hospital with minor burns after a house in Balwyn went up in flames before 7am.

The MFB said a collapsed internal staircase at the two-storey house, and a substantial amount of belongings inside, made initial efforts to fight the fire difficult but the fire was brought under control after about 70 minutes.
