The former stepfather of a four-year-old boy found unconscious in his Gold Coast home with 70 injuries has been refused bail.

Matthew Scown, 33, and his former partner Heidi Strbak, 33, are charged with the manslaughter of her son Tyrell Cobb in May 2009.

Magistrate Anthony Gett rejected Scown's bail application in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Scown muttered "s***" as the magistrate's decision was announced.

Mr Gett said the accused's background and the substantial sentence he would serve if convicted would be a significant concern if he was released.

He described the prosecution case against Scown as "moderately strong", with evidence of him having been aggressive towards Tyrell.

Scown is alleged to have punched or kicked the young boy in the stomach before his death, while he was under his care.

The prosecution opposed his bail on the grounds he was an unacceptable risk of not appearing at future court dates.
