The family of a 29-year-old British woman found dead in mysterious circumstances in Australia just before Christmas have spoken of their devastation.

Stacey Tierney, a fitness instructor from Manchester, was found dead in the Dreams Gentlemen's Club in Melbourne on December 19.

Investigations into her death are continuing.

A statement said the family had been through an "extremely difficult time" since learning about her death.

"Stacey was, and will always be, the most amazing, special, caring person you could ever meet and this loss has devastated our family," they said.

"The circumstances surrounding Stacey's death are being investigated by the authorities in Melbourne and we wait to hear further news every day.

"While we continue to work with the authorities in Melbourne our primary aim at this time is to bring Stacey home.

"Until we have Stacey home and the investigation is complete we would be grateful if the family's privacy can be respected and we are allowed time to come to terms with what has happened."

Stacey moved to Australia three years ago, living first in Brisbane before moving to Melbourne.

She had worked as a fitness instructor, doing zumba and spinning classes, both in Manchester and then in Australia.

The circumstances surrounding the Englishwoman's death are yet to be determined, and Victoria Police say the coroner will investigate the cause.

Police revealed they were investigating her death on Tuesday, and the club has increasingly come under fire from exotic dancers who knew Ms Tierney.

News Corp reports Ms Tierney had been partying at the closed club with several men on Sunday, December 18.

The men reportedly left the club before her body was discovered 12 hours later, just before midday on Monday.
