Keith Urban has walked away empty-handed from the 50th Country Music Association Awards in Nashville.

The New Zealand/Aussie star was nominated for four awards, including the coveted Entertainer of the Year gong, for his ARIA number one album Ripcord.

However, Urban was beaten by country music stalwart Garth Brooks to the big award and also missed out on the Male Vocalist of the Year gong which went to Chris Stapleton.

Beyonce was an unlikely performer at the CMAs this year singing Daddy Lessons, a country track from her album Lemonade, alongside the Dixie Chicks.

Urban also missed out on Album of the Year, which went to Eric Church, and Musical Event of the Year, which was won by Dierks Bentley's Different for Girls featuring Elle King.

Urban won the prestigious Entertainer of the Year award in 2005 and has notched up several other gongs from the CMAs over the years including Male Vocalist of the Year three times.

The singer will begin the Australian leg of his Ripcord tour next month.
