US alliance to remain rock solid: envoy

Outgoing US ambassador John Berry is confident the Australia-US alliance will remain rock solid despite hints from presidential hopeful Donald Trump that some treaties could be dismantled.

While the US had experienced some mediocre presidents it never had one who was truly evil, bad or totally incompetent and all had risen to the challenge of high office.

"I am very confident our alliance will remain rock solid as will our alliance with our other five treaty partners in the Asia-Pacific as well as our many other allies around the world," Mr Berry told the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday.

US alliances were not going to change, regardless of who was in the White House.

"Once they get there, they're going to see just how important those relationships are to the success of our own security and our own place in the world today," he said.

Although not specifically citing Australia, the Republican presidential candidate has made a number of comments suggesting some longstanding alliance partners could be on their own if he became president.

Mr Berry said Australians were familiar with how elections proceeded and how things were said in the heat of politics and debates.

It was very hard for the person who became president not to appreciate the importance, impact and seriousness of every issue that comes across the desk.

"They have all risen to the occasion and recognised the demands of that position," he said.
