US tested on Trump, Clinton choice: Ciobo

Trade Minister Steve Ciobo says he'd be tested as a US voter in the choice between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

Mr Ciobo said he found many of Mr Trump's comments offensive and didn't agree with some of the Republican presidential candidate's positions.

But he equally felt the same with positions adopted by the Democrat candidate.

"So if I was an American citizen I'd be challenged with where I'd want to put my support," he told ABC radio.

Mr Ciobo also weighed in on the NSW parliament labelling Mr Trump a "revolting slug" after a Greens motion condemning the firebrand politician's "misogynistic, hateful" comments passed the upper house.

He said they were unhelpful.

"I don't think it does anything to enhance Australia's diplomatic relations with our long-time ally the United States and frankly it's a little gratuitous."
