Vanish defends product after Shonky shame

Vanish is defending its carpet cleaner after the product made the worst-of-the-worst list at the 2016 Shonky Awards.

Consumer advocacy group Choice rolled out the lemon-coloured carpet for the ceremony in Sydney on Wednesday, calling out the company's Preen Powerpowder for being unable to outperform water during testing.

However, a spokesman for Vanish's bracket company Reckitt Benckiser says Choice used the product on stains other than ground-in dirt - "what the powder is designed for" - during their performance test.

"As indicated on the product label, it is recommended that other types of bleachable or oil-based stains - for example red wine, coffee, or sauce - be pre-treated with an appropriate product for those stains," he said.

"All product claims are backed by testing to ensure consumers receive accurate product information."

The exploding batteries of Samsung's Galaxy Note7 smartphone and Nestle's misleading Milo health star rating were among eight other products to be named and shamed.
