Oscar-winning actor and director Mel Gibson's latest venture, World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge, will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September.

The film was shot in various locations across NSW and tells the true story of US Army medic Desmond Doss during the historic Battle of Okinawa.

Doss, played by British-American actor Andrew Garfield of The Amazing Spider-Man fame, saved 75 men during WWII despite refusing to bear arms or kill.

The war biopic also features Australian actors Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Ryan Corr, Teresa Palmer and Rachel Griffiths.

It is Gibson's first directorial effort since the Oscar-nominated action film Apocalypto (2006) and will be released in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand on November 3.
