Two busy Melbourne beaches have been reopened following a shark sighting.

Surf Life Saving Victoria closed Elwood and St Kilda beaches on Sunday afternoon after a 1.5-metre shark was spotted swimming 100m off St Kilda Marina shortly after midday.

Both beaches reopened two hours after the sighting, as per standard procedure.

Fairhaven Beach on the Great Ocean Road was also closed after a shark sighting around midday.
