A Melbourne cat owner has warned people to keep their pets inside after her beloved cat was shot dead by an arrow.

Maddie Sanft discovered her cat Tui dead on her Ashwood home's driveway, impaled by the arrow on Boxing Day.

"I feel sick to the stomach that someone could do this to my beautiful boy," she posted on social media.

Ms Sanft said police had interviewed neighbours and had collected the "dart" for evidence.

Senior Constable Simon Twarowski said the nature of the crime is concerning.

"Who knows what else they (the offenders) might be using these kind of weapons for," Sen Con Twarowski told Seven News.

Despite police investigating, Ms Sanft has told the Herald Sun she will be looking to relocate.

"We don't feel safe anymore," she said.

Police don't know where or when the cat was injured and are calling for people with any information to call Crime Stoppers.
