A police station in country Victoria has reopened after it had to be evacuated when a white powder found in an abandoned car was brought into the station by officers who mistakenly thought it was drugs.

Officers searched the car - which was believed to have been abandoned following a crash - on Saturday night at Lake Boga and found a possible explosive device and white powder they believed was drugs.

The bomb response unit removed the device but the white powder was taken to Swan Hill Police Station were it was found to be "an unknown volatile substance", Victoria Police said in a statement on Sunday morning.

The police station was evacuated just after 6am and reopened at 1pm.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman wouldn't say what the white power actually was nor whether the suspected explosive device was indeed a bomb.

"That's all part of the investigation," she said on Sunday afternoon.
