Heavily armed special operations police spent seven hours laying siege to a Melbourne home, only to find it empty.

Critical Incident Response Team officers were called to a house on Callanan Drive in Melton at 9.30am on Monday and tried to negotiate with a man they believed was inside.

Police had been told a man they were looking for was in the house.

"(Police), taking every precaution, attempted to call out to anyone inside the house," a police statement said on Monday.

"After no response from the property, the house was entered and cleared about 4.30pm and no occupants were located inside."

It wasn't a total bust though - a vehicle and a motorcycle, believed to be stolen, were seized.
