Two police officers delivered a baby on the side of a Victorian road and then drove the mother to hospital.

The officers pulled over a speeding car at Tyrendarra, near Portland, around 8.40pm on Wednesday to find an expectant mother in labour.

An ambulance was called but the baby boy wasn't going to wait so the officers helped deliver him at 9pm.

The police then made way for paramedics to look after the woman and baby as they drove the ambulance to Warrnambool Hospital themselves.
