Vic couple on trial for medical cannabis

A Victorian couple who have admitted providing medical cannabis to cancer patients are on trial for illegally growing the narcotic plant.

Elizabeth and Matthew Pallett have pleaded not guilty to cultivating a narcotic plant after police seized 15.5 kilograms of cannabis from their Melbourne home in 2015.

The pair are representing themselves at their Victorian County Court trial, which will on Friday hear evidence from a botanist who analysed the cannabis found at their Carrum Downs home.

The prosecution says it doesn't matter if the Palletts have good intentions.

The allegation is the couple cultivated a narcotic plant, and not why they did it, prosecutor Andrew Moore said in his opening statement on Thursday.
