A half-century by opener Jordan Silk has helped Tasmania take a 100-run lead in their Sheffield Shield clash with Victoria in Hobart, where the visitors lost a key member of their bowling attack.

At stumps on Tuesday the hosts were 3-127 in their second innings the Bushrangers up against it with allrounder John Hastings suffering an injury.

After bowling the first ball of his fourth over the veteran quick slipped on the Bellerive pitch and quickly grabbed at his right knee.

Hastings limped from the ground and news came later that he had gone to hospital for treatment.

After taking 2-29 to help dismiss the Tigers for 203 in their first innings, Hastings was missed by the travelling Vics during Tuesday's night session when the home side made valuable ground.

The Tigers had a shaky start including the loss without score of opener Ben Dunk.

Silk (71 not out) dug in after being handed a lifeline on 15 when dropped by wicketkeeper Sam Harper.

He went on to find only temporary support from No.3 Jake Hancock (10) and Ben McDermott (29).

Silk will resume on Wednesday with fellow unbeaten batsman Beau Webster (6 no).

Victoria resumed their first innings at 3-54 on Tuesday but other than a strong half century from allrounder Dan Christian (93), the Victorians fell couldn't amass a substantial lead and were bowled out for 230.

Hastings was rushed off for scans, Christian confirmed after play.

"It's something to do with his knee but I'm not sure what it is," he said.

Christian added that the Bushrangers' batting was disappointing, losing three wickets at the end of day one and then four more in Tuesday's first session.

"That really put us on the back foot."

The home side was pleased to limit the damage by restricting the visitors' run total and Silk said batting through the night session was a personal milestone.
