Farms were the most dangerous place to work in Victoria in 2016, according to figures on workplace deaths across the state.

Worksafe Victoria called 2016 a 'horror year' for workplace deaths with 26 people losing their lives, eight of them in farm accidents and 18 in Melbourne.

It marks the most workplace fatalities since 2009, WorkSafe said on Monday.

The youngest person to die was a 21-year-old dairy farmer who was electrocuted while working on a pump in a drainage pit.

Inspectors made more than 46,000 visits to workplaces across the state last year and say they will continue to target high-risk sectors in 2017.
