A prisoner is in a critical condition after being brutally bashed at a maximum security prison in Melbourne.

The 20-year-old victim was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after allegedly being beaten by another Port Phillip Prison inmate about 6.30pm on Tuesday.

He was struck in the head before his attacker began kicking and stomping on him.

A 35-year-old inmate is being questioned by police.

News Corp Australia reports the alleged attacker and victim weren't supposed to be out of their cells at the same time.

It was the second time in seven hours paramedics attended Port Phillip Prison, after a brawl before midday left three prisoners requiring medical treatment.

That incident, unrelated to the later bashing, saw one prisoner taken to hospital in a stable condition. Two others received treatment on-site.

Port Phillip Prison houses about 1080 inmates in 13 maximum-security blocks.

British multinational security company G4S runs the prison - which is one of two privately-operated jails in Victoria.
