A man unloading his groceries has been attacked and had his car stolen in Melbourne.

He was approached on Thursday afternoon by two men wearing balaclavas, demanding he hand over the keys to his new Holden Commodore SS at his Hallam home, police say.

The man was taken to hospital with minor injuries and his car was later discovered in bushes along the Monash Freeway on-ramp.
