A man who claimed his face had been slashed in a violent robbery in Melbourne's east has been charged with making a false report to police.

The 69-year-old man told police his wallet and car were stolen from outside a Ferntree Gully pub at 4.50pm on Tuesday by two men.

Police on Wednesday charged the man with false report, perjury and conduct endangering a person.

They allege the man's wallet was stolen by two men and a teenage girl known to him at Brennock Park.

He then followed the thieves in his car and rammed it several times at the edge of the oval before the thieves fled, police say.

Investigators believe he left his car at the oval and walked to the nearby hotel to make the report.

The Boronia man has been bailed to appear at the Ringwood Magistrates Court on March 30, 2017.
