A man has been charged after a Ford Mustang stolen from a Melbourne car dealership smashed into a police car.

Seven cars were stolen from a Frankston dealership at 3.30am on Saturday, including the Mustang.

A 22-year-old Carrum Downs man was arrested on Saturday afternoon after a member of the public saw the car driving erratically in Lyndhurst in Melbourne's southeast.

The car came to a stop when it collided with a police car.

The man has been charged with numerous offences including car theft, burglary and drug possession and is scheduled to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday.

Police have only recovered three of the stolen cars and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

Three Ford Territories, two G6E Ford sedans, the Mustang and a Ford Ranger were stolen.
