A Melbourne man who allegedly murdered his housemate found with 18 stab wounds will remain in custody.

Gary Sean O'Connor, 53, faced Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with murdering his housemate Michael Barnicoat at a Springvale boarding house a day earlier.

Mr Barnicoat was found with stab wounds by other residents at the Peter Street home just after 12am on Wednesday, and despite efforts to revive him, he died at the scene.

O'Connor was charged with murder at an out-of-sessions hearing on Wednesday night, where he unsuccessfully applied for bail.

On Thursday, Magistrate John Hardy told the 53-year-old that bail was out of the court's hands due to the murder charge.

O'Connor has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance in February.

Police say that during an interview O'Connor admitted stabbing the victim twice.

Mr Barnicoat was stabbed after a verbal argument between him and O'Connor became physical, Detective Senior Constable Christopher Saulle told the out-of-sessions hearing.

Other housemates ran out to find him crouched over in the hallway. One called police while another attempted CPR.

The efforts continued when police arrived, but the man died at the scene and O'Connor was found with blood on his hands and clothes, police say.

The victim's body had 18 incise wounds and blunt force trauma to the face, Det Sen Const Saulle said.
