A Victorian man who stabbed his drug dealer to death during a bungled armed robbery will spend at least 13 and a half years behind bars.

Vatthana Chounlamountry was found guilty of statutory - unintentional - murder, after he stabbed Thanh "Phong" Nguyen nine times at his St Albans home while trying to steal money from the 23-year-old father in May 2014.

The 31-year-old was sentenced to 17 and a half years jail in the Victorian Supreme Court on Friday, and must serve a minimum 13 and a half years before he is eligible for parole.
