A Melbourne man with a suspended licence allegedly used his mother's car to run down an estranged friend.

Paul Gourgouletis, 24, appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with hitting the unnamed victim with a vehicle, driving while suspended and driving with cannabis in his system.

Gourgouletis allegedly struck the man on Friday at a shopping centre in Preston, causing him to fly into the air and suffer head and neck injuries, a police prosecutor told the court.

It's alleged the former friend had to take evasive action and dodge between taxis before Gourgouletis eventually struck them with his vehicle.

He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital with head and neck injuries and concussion.

Gourgouletis allegedly drove away after the crash and also faces charges of failing to report the accident and failing to render assistance.

Police say when they went to Gourgouletis' house, they found the car covered with a sheet.

The 24-year-old's Legal Aid lawyer told the court Gourgouletis plans to dispute the allegations.

Despite police opposing his release, Gourgouletis was granted bail to reappear in court in December.
