Former Health Services Union official Kimberley Kitching has officially been chosen to replace retiring Labor senator Stephen Conroy.

Ms Kitching's application to fill the casual Senate vacancy was accepted before a joint sitting in the Victorian Parliament on Tuesday night.

Flanked by her husband Andrew Landeryou - who ran an often-defamatory blog until 2013 - Ms Kitching received hugs and kisses from Labor MPs before formalities began.

Mr Conroy sat next to Health Workers Union secretary Diana Asmar, but Labor leader Bill Shorten was nowhere to be seen despite backing his long-time friend for the job.

The brief joint sitting, which was only a formality and lasted less than five minutes, ended with raucous applause from both sides of parliament.
