Leaders from Victoria's South Sudanese community are being consulted by police who are trying to understand why young people are committing risky crimes.

South Sudanese Association of Victoria president Kot Monoah hopes the bi-monthly meetings with senior police from Melbourne's northwest will educate officers about community views.

"It makes sure that both organisations have a finger on the pulse to know the issues affecting the community at any point in time," he said in a statement on Thursday.
