Officers have used their police batons to smash the windows of a burning car and rescue a woman trapped inside in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick.

The 19-year-old fell asleep in her car on Sydney Road sometime before 1.55am on Sunday and a passerby raised the alarm when they saw the vehicle on fire.

Officers at the nearby police station rushed to help and used their batons to smash the car's windows before pulling the woman to safety with the help of another member of the public.

The woman was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation along with a police officer who sustained minor cuts to his hands.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
