Vic police to ditch faxes for tablets

Victoria Police will soon ditch the fax machine for something more high tech - mobile devices will be rolled out across the force.

A tender has been released for 8500 mobile devices that will give police access to up-to-the-minute information on incidents and offenders.

The devices will then be rolled out across the force late this year and early 2017.

"There wouldn't be a crook out there that didn't have an iPhone and we've got our Victoria Police members using faxes, pens and paper," Premier Daniel Andrews said in Wednesday.

It is anticipated the electronic system will free up 30 minutes of administrative work for each officer, each eight-hour day.

A limited number of body-worn cameras will be trialled on some officers, as recommended by the Royal Commission into Family Violence.
